On Wednesday 13th May, Sophie O’Shea, Head of Marketing at DOC Cleaning, was invited to join a panel of industry voices for the CSSA Question Time event on some of the key topics currently shaping the cleaning and facilities management sector.
The future of cleaning and FM

The panel discussion covered a range of topics, including sustainability, AI adoption, labour and workforce pressures, and even the introduction of humanoids.
Each of these areas is increasingly relevant to the future of facilities management – particularly as businesses consider how best to balance innovation with practicality, service quality and workforce engagement.
Sustainability remained a key area of focus throughout the discussion, with the industry looking at how cleaning providers, suppliers and clients can work together to reduce environmental impact. Discussing responsible procurement and product innovation, the conversation highlighted the importance of collaboration across the full supply chain.
The growing role of AI and automation within the sector was also explored. As new technologies become more accessible, adpating to how AI and robotics could support service delivery, responding to changing client needs. At the same time, the panel considered adopting technology in a realistic and responsible way, keeping people central to the future of the industry.
Connecting the industry
One of the strengths of the event was the level of engagement from the audience. Questions from attendees made for debate around how businesses can respond to changing market conditions and increasing expectations placed on cleaning and facilities management providers.
Sophie joined fellow panellists Matt Dean, Head of Healthcare Cleaning at ISS, Kola Odetayo, Managing Director at Integra, Sophie Edwards, Business Development Manager at Bunzl Cleaning and Hygiene Supplies (BCHS), and Simon Barry, Commercial Director at Numatic. Together, the panel brought a range of perspectives from across the industry, representing different areas of service delivery, supply, innovation and sector leadership.
The discussion provided a useful opportunity to hear how organisations across the sector are approaching shared challenges. It also highlighted the value of open conversation between contractors, suppliers, clients and industry bodies as the cleaning industry continues to develop.
