Our HR Director, Jane Malone, who has been part of the DOC family since January 2018, first developed a passion for running in her fourties. Her journey began with local park runs, before progressing to 10km racing events and marathons.
Keen to take her passion to the next level, Jane developed a relationship with Heartburn Cancer UK, a charity dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of persistent heartburn, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and Barrett’s oesophagus. As a recognised and trusted authority in the field of cancer of the oesophagus, Heartburn Cancer UK provides valuable information on prevention, detection and treatment of the disease.
Within her relationship with Heartburn Cancer UK, her efforts focused on raising awareness of the signs of oesophageal cancer and fundraising in support of the extension of a pilot scheme of a pioneering new test to enable early diagnosis. This was an incredibly personal project, having lost her stepfather, Bill, to oesophageal cancer due to late diagnosis in 2018.
In celebration of her 50th birthday, Jane has pledged to dedicate her year to taking part in a series of physical challenges to raise greater awareness around the symptoms of oesophageal cancer so that others have a better likelihood of early diagnosis. From 24-hour multi-terrain races and marathons to even racing against horses, Jane is on a mission to make a positive impact.
Jane has five events lined up for her fundraising festival so far and plans to push this even further. The confirmed events include:
- The Grizzly – 9th March 2025
- Brighton Marathon – 7th April 2025
- Man v Horse – 14th June 2025
- Spitfire Scramble – 5th-6th July 2025
- Beachy Head Marathon – 26th October 2025

About Heartburn Cancer UK

With heartburn affecting up to 10% of the UK population, Heartburn Cancer UK is on a mission to encourage those suffering to seek medical advice if symptoms are present for more than three weeks.
