Global Recycling Day takes place annually on March 18th, created by the Global Recycling Foundation to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and encourage both individuals and businesses to take action in reducing waste and protecting the environment.
According to Business Waste, 430 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated each year, much of which ends up in landfills or our oceans. Alarming statistics like these highlight the urgent need to improve recycling habits wherever possible.
This year, in support of Global Recycling Day, we’re sharing our own recycling initiatives in the hope of inspiring others within the cleaning industry to enhance their efforts.
In-Office Efforts
We believe that real change starts from within, which is why we trial and test all our waste solutions before introducing them to client sites. In our office, we have several recycling initiatives, including ink cartridge recycling, electrical equipment (WEEE) repurposing, Nespresso pod recycling, and more.
Waste Recycling
Through clear signage, strategic bin placement, and staff training, we have dedicated waste areas for paper, plastics, food waste, and other recyclables.
While we strive to maintain a paperless approach in our office, we ensure that any necessary printing or notebook use is followed by responsible recycling. Collected paper waste is sorted in the building’s waste area, checked for contamination, and sent to a local recycling facility for repurposing.
WEEE Recycling
To ensure our WEEE waste is repurposed, we collaborate with local charities and electrical waste specialists. These partners check, update, and repair our donated equipment, giving it a second life and providing access to essential technology for those in need.
Through our donations, we have contributed valuable equipment that has been refurbished and redistributed within our community, helping to bridge the digital divide.
Client Solutions
With our experience, we have introduced a range of recycling solutions at client sites. These include innovative waste streams, uniform recycling, charity donation initiatives, and dedicated waste operatives. Through these efforts, we help reduce environmental impact and significantly lower waste output, supporting a more sustainable future.
Dedicated Waste Operatives
One of the most effective ways to improve recycling efforts is by introducing a dedicated waste operative. With the right training, this role optimises waste management, helps meet recycling targets, and reduces contamination.
We have placed dedicated waste operatives at prestigious sites such as the Royal Opera House and Moor House. Their presence has enhanced waste segregation, lowered contamination rates in recycling streams, and improved overall efficiency in waste disposal.
Innovative Waste Streams
We are always looking for new and innovative ways to manage waste more effectively. Through our partner systems, we help clients improve their sustainability efforts by measuring waste at a granular level.
While many clients have fully implemented our waste management systems, others are currently in the trial phase. The Royal Academy of Music is trialling ReLearn’s Nando System, and in a short time, we have identified key areas for improvement, measured the average recycling rate, calculated CO₂ emissions, and assessed operational efficiency.

Employee Workwear Recycling
We strive to achieve a closed-loop recycling system wherever possible, including how we manage employee workwear. Through our partnership with SMI, we provide recycled uniforms to our on-site employees, ensuring they feel comfortable and look professional while reducing environmental impact. Additionally, SMI’s workwear recycling scheme ensures all uniforms are safely recycled and repurposed.
Sustainable Cleaning Equipment
Using sustainable, eco-friendly cleaning equipment not only protects our employees but also reduces our environmental impact. To support commercial recycling efforts, we prioritise sustainably sourced and biodegradable products wherever possible.
Items like cloths, sprays, sponges, wipes, and brushes can add to waste output if used as single-use products. We invest in organic, recycled, and bio-based cleaning materials that can be sanitised and reused multiple times within the same service.
Charity Donations
Redistribution plays a key role in reducing business waste, which is why we actively promote charity donations wherever possible. We support the donation of electrical equipment, plastic materials, and workwear to extend their lifespan and reduce landfill waste.
One example is our partnership with AquAid. When providing water cooler services, we collaborate with AquAid, whose approach not only supports recycling within the commercial sector but also benefits wider communities. For every water cooler or bottle collected from client sites, AquAid makes a donation on our behalf to The Africa Trust. These funds go directly toward building fresh drinking water wells for communities in Africa where they are needed most.
Simpler Recycling Legislation
We recently launched our ‘Guide to Simpler Recycling’ booklet in preparation for the new Simpler Recycling Legislation coming into effect on March 31, 2025. This guide helps businesses prepare for the changes, outlines available support, and provides insights into recycling solutions tailored to their needs.
