As part of our Bright Futures programme, we welcomed Albie for a week of work experience, giving him the opportunity to explore an industry he knew very little about while gaining first-hand experience of how a commercial cleaning and facilities management business operates.
Throughout the week, Albie spent time with colleagues across both our Head Office and operational teams, discovering the people, departments and processes that work together to deliver high-quality services across our client portfolio.
The placement was designed to introduce Albie to the wide variety of careers available within the business, while helping him build confidence, develop workplace skills and gain a better understanding of professional working environments.
What is our Bright Futures programme?
Bright Futures is our student engagement programme designed to give young people meaningful workplace experience while introducing them to the diverse careers available across the commercial cleaning and facilities management industry.
Every placement is designed to provide practical experience rather than simply observation. Students spend time with different departments, visit operational sites and gain an understanding of how teams across the business collaborate to support our clients.
By providing real workplace experiences, Bright Futures helps young people explore future career pathways while developing valuable skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond.
Discovering the business behind commercial cleaning
Before joining DOC Cleaning, Albie had never really considered the breadth of careers that exist within the commercial cleaning and facilities management industry.
During the placement, he quickly discovered that delivering professional cleaning services depends on far more than operational teams alone.
Throughout the week, Albie spent time with colleagues from Marketing, People & Culture, Compliance, Finance and other support functions, learning how every department contributes to the successful delivery of our services.
Meeting people from different professional backgrounds also helped demonstrate that there are many routes into employment, including apprenticeships, university, vocational qualifications and hands-on industry experience.
By the end of the week, Albie had developed a much broader understanding of how a modern facilities management business operates and the wide range of careers it offers.
Seeing operations in action
Alongside his time in Head Office, Albie visited several of our client sites, giving him the opportunity to experience the operational side of the business.
Seeing live operations helped him understand the planning, communication and teamwork required to deliver professional cleaning services across a diverse portfolio of commercial and heritage buildings.
The visits also demonstrated how operational colleagues work closely with Head Office departments to ensure contracts run efficiently, client expectations are met and high standards are maintained across every site.
Experiencing both environments gave Albie a valuable appreciation of how every team contributes towards the same objective — delivering exceptional service for our clients.
Changing perceptions of the industry
One of the most valuable outcomes from Albie’s placement was seeing his perception of the industry evolve.
Like many young people, his understanding of commercial cleaning was initially limited to the visible services carried out on site.
By experiencing the business from different perspectives, Albie discovered the professionalism, collaboration and expertise that support every contract, together with the many specialist roles that exist behind the scenes.
The placement also highlighted the importance of communication, organisation and teamwork, helping him develop a greater appreciation for the people who contribute to the success of the business every day.
Developing confidence and workplace skills
Throughout the week, Albie worked alongside colleagues from across the business, giving him valuable experience within a professional workplace.
The placement helped develop practical skills including communication, teamwork and organisation, while encouraging him to ask questions and learn from experienced professionals.
Experiencing different departments also allowed Albie to explore career pathways he had not previously considered, giving him a clearer understanding of the opportunities available within the commercial cleaning and facilities management industry.
